Strumenti musicali e “genius saeculi”

Abstract: Musical instruments are between the compositional idea and the real world. They are resonant artifacts that are born with the aim of producing vibrations that, by propagating in an elastic medium, reach our ears and are perceived as sound, as music. They create a kind of Wi-Fi connection between the performer/musician and the listeners, giving life to a physical phenomenon that is deeply related to the magical power of the perceptual aspect of music: it is an intangible phenomenon, it is impermanent, it is circumscribed. It is therefore natural that the object, the instrument that creates this phenomenon, is loaded with mystical, esoteric and symbolic meanings becoming representative of a culture, of a social class, of an epoch. To deepen the relationship between genius saeculi and musical instruments this essay analyze the rise and fall of one of the most linear instruments of European Baroque: the viola da gamba. In its moment of greatest splendor is the instrument of the aristocracy and is the instrument of the French aristocracy. An era, a social class, a nation.
